Question #13

How do you get out of your head?
— I

Dear I,

This will take some practice, but here are some mantras that have worked for me.

  • I do not have enough information about this right now.
Sometimes we spiral into hypothetical after hypothetical when there’s a gap in communication, or we don’t know what’s going on. It takes some work to not do that to yourself, and to just say, I don’t know what’s going on, and that’s okay.

  • I am not the center of the universe.
While I am the main character in my own life, most other people are not thinking about me. They won’t notice the typo, or the bad hair day, and they will forget about that one mistake you made in your last presentation. This is freeing, because you can just go ahead and do what you want to without worrying about how other people will respond or react.

  • I will be okay if things don’t work out my way.
Very few situations that we potentially face will do permanent damage to our lives. Things will probably work out, but even if they don’t, you will survive, and you will probably thrive in other ways. I’m reminding you here about that saying about rejection actually being redirection, and that other saying about some doors being better closed.
