Question #42

How did you choose your career?
— HL

Dear HL,

I really didn’t have a strategy. I thought about what I might want my career to feel like. I tried new things. I learned what I was good at, and what I liked, and what I didn’t like. I talked to people about their jobs. I explored things that sounded they might be interesting — some of them were, and some were not.

There are probably more formal ways to do this, but I think the way I approached my career is knowing that I didn’t have to figure out my whole career all at once, I just needed to know the next step, and have a general idea of where I wanted to go.

I encourage you to do the same. Explore. Talk to people about their jobs. Shadow folks if their job allows for this.
