Question #9

Where’s the best place to find a mentor?
— B

Dear B,

The answer is, anywhere! Everywhere!

I think sometimes we want to make mentorship A Thing. It doesn’t have to be A Thing. It could be just following someone on social media whose career you admire and who shares that with the general public. It could be the person down the hall that you get coffee and talk through problems with once or twice per week. It could be an older cousin who you go to Target and talk about life with once per month.

The key to finding a mentor is just finding someone who that you admire in the area you would like mentoring in. Observe that person and receive what they have to offer. They don’t have to know that they are your mentor, you just have to be interested in their perspective, inasmuch as they share it with the world. This is helpful, because it broadens the types of mentorship experiences that you can have, and it can help you avoid people who look great from afar, but are lowkey (or highkey) toxic up close.
