Question #41

How do you figure out when to jump ship [at work] before it sinks?
— FG

Dear FG,

Here’s the thing. There’s not a great answer to this. If you wait until you know the ship is sinking, it’s already a bit late. However, you could also leave and things could right themselves. Instead of trying to time things according to what is happening at your job, how about you finetune your own inner compass (I’m keeping with the nautical/voyager theme here lol.)

I can offer you some questions to ask yourself if you are thinking about jumping ship, at work, or in any other area of life:

  • Does this place no longer align with your values?

  • Does it seem like things have changed so much at work that you no longer want to be there?

  • Do you feel like you’ve outgrown this place? (i.e. fewer places for you to grow into)

  • Are you ready for something different?

  • Have there been signs of serious financial trouble at work? (Layoffs, major budget cuts, reduced programming, etc)

If after this exercise, this no longer seems like the place for you, leave. It could be because you don’t want to be there, or it just feels really unstable. You don’t have to stay, there’s always a new place for you!
